Definition of sections

1st line

!SECTION, TYPE=<type>, EGRP=<egrp> [, optional parameter]
Parameter
TYPE Section type (required)
EGRP Element group name (required)
MATERIAL User-defined material name (required)
SECOPT Auxiliary parameter for the element type (optional; =0 if omitted)
INPUT External file name (optional)
Parameter name Parameter value Description
TYPE SOLID Rod, triangular, quadrilateral, tetrahedral, pentahedral, and hexahedral elements
SHELL Shell elements
BEAM Beam elements
INTERFACE Interface elements and connector elements
EGRP <egrp> Element group name
MATERIAL <material > User-defined material name
SECOPT <secopt> = 0: unspecified, plane stress
= 1: plane strain
= 2: axisymmetric
=10: 0 + reduced integration
=11: 1 + reduced integration
=12: 2 + reduced integration
INPUT <filename> External file name (optional); may also be used together with the 2nd and subsequent lines

The section type must be consistent with the element types contained in the element group specified by EGRP. The correspondence is as follows (see !ELEMENT for details of element types).

Section type Corresponding element types
SOLID 111, 231, 232, 241, 242, 301, 341, 342, 351, 352, 361, 362
SHELL 731, 741, 743, 761, 781
BEAM 611, 641
INTERFACE 511 (connector element), 541 (interface element)

2nd line and subsequent lines

For TYPE=SOLID

(2nd line) `THICKNESS`
Variable name Attribute Description
THICKNESS R Cross-sectional area for truss elements (required)

For TYPE=SOLID, THICKNESS may be omitted.

For TYPE=SHELL

(2nd line) THICKNESS, INTEGPOINTS
Variable name Attribute Description
THICKNESS R Shell section thickness
INTEGPOINTS I Integration points through the shell section thickness

For TYPE=BEAM

(2nd line) vx,vy,vz,area,Iyy,Iz,Jx
Variable name Attribute Description
vx,vy,vz R Reference-axis direction
area R Cross-sectional area
Iyy, Izz R Second moment of area
Jx R Torsional constant

For TYPE=INTERFACE

(2nd line) THICKNESS, GAPCON, GAPRAD1, GAPRAD2
Variable name Attribute Description
THICKNESS R Section thickness
GAPCON R Gap heat-transfer coefficient (0 if omitted)
GAPRAD1 R Gap radiative heat-transfer coefficient-1 (0 if omitted)
GAPRAD2 R Gap radiative heat-transfer coefficient-2 (0 if omitted)

TYPE=INTERFACE is used for connector elements (511), which represent springs and dashpots, in addition to interface elements (541). For connector elements, THICKNESS is not used in stiffness or damping calculations because they have no cross section, but the 2nd line itself cannot be omitted and a positive value must be specified (1.0 is sufficient). GAPCON, GAPRAD1, and GAPRAD2 are parameters used for heat-transfer calculations and are not used for connector elements.

For a connector element's MATERIAL, specify the material name for which the spring constant or damping coefficient is defined (a material for which !SPRING_A / !SPRING_D / !DASHPOT_A / !DASHPOT_D is specified under !MATERIAL on the cnt side).

Notes

  • An error occurs if parameter TYPE is not consistent with the element type.
  • An error occurs if any element has no SECTION information.
  • An error occurs if a section name is duplicated.

Example

!SECTION, EGRP=SHELL2, TYPE=SHELL, MATERIAL=STEEL
1.0, 5
